Summary
With James Gunn’sSupermanmovie coming up,Smallvilleactor Michael Rosenbaum reveals he asked theDC Universeboss on why he wasn’t in the new film.DC Universe Chapter 1is on its way, as he is currently directingthe newSupermanmoviewith David Corenswet as the franchise’s next Man of Steel. Filming is currently set to last until July, which is fitting asSupermanarrives in theaters next summer.
At a recent Nashville Comicon 2024 panel, which was moderated byComic Book,Smallville’sRosenbaum opened up on having talked with Gunn about why he wasn’t part of the newSupermanmovie. With Nicholas Hoult set to play the new Lex Luthor in the DC Universe, Rosenbaum added the following:

I’m always up for a challenge. I’m always up for fun. Whatever comes to me, I look at it, and if it’s not too silly, or if it makes me laugh, or I think I could do a really good job or I think I can make an impression, I’ll do it. So I’m at that point in my career where I just want to do things that I love, that I want to do. I asked him, ‘Why am I not inSuperman? Why am I not in the movie somehow?’ It was fine, though. I wish him all the happiness. He deserves all the success he has. He’s enormously talented. When it’s the right thing, he’ll ask me. Or he won’t. And that’s aside from friendship. When your friends go off and do big things, you say, ‘Hey, they know I’m here. They know my number.’ And you just hope for the best.

Who Michael Rosenbaum Could Play In James Gunn’s DCU
While Rosenbaum may not be part oftheSupermanmovie cast, it doesn’t mean he couldn’t show up later in the DC Universe. As Rosenbaum and Gunn have worked together previously on the filmmaker’sGuardians of the Galaxyfilms, it wouldn’t be shocking at all to see theSmallvillestar join the franchise in the future. However, with the amount of DC characters that exist in the comic book canon, the big question is who Rosenbaum could play in Gunn’s DC Universe.
A fun role for the actor that would also pay a nod toSmallvillecould be having him play a young Lionel Luthor, who is Lex’s father in the canon. InScreen Rant’sexclusive interview withRosenbaum about the DC Universe, theSmallvilleactor was open to the possibility of playing Lionel, who was previously played by John Glover onSmallville. Rosenbaum stated,“If that ever came to the table, I would certainly consider it. I feel like I’m capable of really doing anything for the most part.”

Given Rosenbaum’s massive popularity with the DC audience, it would be great to see him in Gunn’s franchise in some capacity. With Gunn and Rosenbaum having a good relationship, there will hopefully come a time when they end up collaborating through DC Studios. As theSupermanmovie gets closer to finishing production, more news will hopefully arrive sooner rather than later about the reboot.
