Who is the Swordsman? Hawkeye character returns in Daredevil: Born Again Episode 6

The Swordsman, one of the best characters from Hawkeye, returns inDaredevil: Born AgainEpisode 6. If you’ve forgotten who he is (or maybe you didn’t watch thatMCUshow), we’ve got you covered.

Disney Plus has givenDaredevilfans a double helping of the Man Without Fear this week, with two episodes dropping on the same night.

Tony Dalton as The Swordsman

It’s easy to see why. Episode 5 is a small-scale (and brilliant) bottle episode that pits Matt Murdock against a group of Irish bank robbers in New York – and, notably, it doesn’t do much to further the story.

Episode 6 keeps things moving, with Matt finally tracking downMuseand Kingpin indulging in a bit of criminality (and gaining weight), and it paves the way for an unexpected cameo.

Who is the Swordsman?

The Swordsman, real name Jacques Duquesne, is a wealthy socialite and vigilantewho first appeared in the MCU in Hawkeye. He is played by Tony Dalton, best known for his role as Lalo Salamanca in Better Call Saul.

Quick catch-up: Kate Bishop suspected him of murdering his own uncle, Armand Duquenesque, but it was actually her mother Eleanor who killed him, as he’d grown suspicious of her association with Wilson Fisk.

By the end, despite Eleanor’s efforts to frame him for Armand’s murder and have him convicted for money laundering, he emerged innocent – and, more importantly, as an ally to Kate and Hawkeye against the Tracksuit Mafia.

This is a little similar to his arc in the Marvel comics, first appearing in The Avengers #19 (1965) as an antagonist who betrays the team and becomes a villain for hire. He eventually rejoined the Avengers, participating in the Avengers/Defenders war and even helping them against Kang.

Daredevil: Born Again leaves 2 big unanswered questions about Foggy & Adam

We don’t know a lot about him in the MCU. In Hawkeye, we were told he was born into wealth and he’s “never worked a day in [his] life.”

As his name suggests, he’s extremely talented with swords, having been fascinated by them from a young age.

Why is the Swordsman in Daredevil: Born Again?

While it’s unclear if the Swordsman will have a big role in Daredevil: Born Again, it seems like he could be impacted by Kingpin’s campaign against vigilantes.

Fisk has vowed to rid New York’s streets of vigilantes like Daredevil,The Punisher, andSpider-Man, so that puts the Swordsman in his crosshairs. He may also want his money; after all, a mayor needs donations to keep his promises, and Jacques has plenty of cash.
