FromBella HadidtoBilly Klapperand Billy Bob Thornton to Tom Hanks, the Sheridan cameo world isn’t a small one. But the newest episode of 1923 has fans wondering if they’ve spotted a popular actor underneath all the makeup.
So, was that Michael Shannon as the “Tax Collector”? Or is it just some wishful thinking from viewers? Here’s what you need to know.
No, that’s not Michael Shannon in 1923
Sorry folks, but the “Tax Collector” in 1923 Season 2 Episode 4 isn’t played by Michael Shannon – he’s played by actor Micah Fitzgerald.
Let’s set the scene: Spencer has been captured by police for his part in the bootlegging operation run by Luca’s family. He manages to escape them in Fort Worth, running into the trainyard and jumping onto a leaving train.
When he settles down, he sees he’s not alone in the carriage. There are three others, including a wordless man, a young girl, and a gruff man who calls himself the Tax Collector. They explain that in order to ride the train, Spencer will need to pay them the “train tax.” (“Everybody’s got to pay,” the man ominously tells him.)
Obviously, Spencer isn’t giving anything to these guys. But the Tax Collector makes a pretty obvious threat, telling Spencer that he’ll likely fall asleep soon. When he does, they’ll strike on him.

Upon the episode’s release, fans seemed to think the Tax Collector is played by Oscar-nominated actor Michael Shannon. Having starred in movies including Man of Steel, The Shape of Water, and Knives Out, he’s certainly a recognizable cast member in any context.
However, you may be barking up the wrong tree with this one. The Tax Collector is covered in dirt and sweat – and also has a big bushy beard – but this definitely isn’t Michael Shannon:
The confusion can also be attributed to the credits, or lack thereof. The Tax Collector isn’t included in the episode’s credits under the same character name, but either way, Shannon’s name doesn’t appear in the credits either.
As such, viewers have assumed he played the role in an uncredited capacity.
Plus, Shannon and Sheridan do have a real-world connection, with both actors having starred in the 2018war film12 Strong. Since Sheridan has included his famous buddies in his shows in the past, this wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.
