InThe Ultimates#1,Tony shows off what might be his best armor yet, but the inevitable toll it will take on him throws it into doubt.
The Ultimates#1 is written by Deniz Camp and drawn by Juan Frigeri. Tony, calling himself Iron Lad, is bringing together a team of heroes to help topple the Maker, who will break free of his prison in 18 months. Tony stays up nights, agonizing over the best course of action. He then reveals thathis armor has been designed to feed him not only nutrients to sustain him, but has also been pumping his bloodstream with “proprietary Stark stimulants.”

A teenage Tony Stark bringing together a new incarnation of the Avengers is but one of the many radical changes Marvel has introduced in its new Ultimate imprint. Just as the original Ultimate line was a “ground zero” reimagining of Marvel’s biggest heroes, the new incarnation is bringing fans some shocking takes as well. In this new universe, the Maker kept the Heroic Age from coming to pass, either outright killing heroes or bringing them under his control. Now, Iron Lad and the new Ultimates must overthrow him and free their planet.
Iron Lad’s new armor may be one ofTony Stark’s best suits yet, but it comes with downsides that might negatively influence his behavior. The armor somehow pumps Tony’s blood full of nutrients, which, on the surface, seems like a great idea. However, the motivations for designing the feature are less than ideal. Tony is working 24 hours a day, 7 days a week on how to defeat the Maker. When Tony enters a “workaholic” phase, it is usually a sign of great mental stress. Having lost his father and being declared a terrorist is getting under his skin.

What makes Iron Man’s new armor truly terrifying are the Stark brand stimulants it is feeding him in addition to nutrients. Tony has, on numerous occasions, demonstrated addictive behavior, most notably in theDemon in a Bottlestoryline. Tony was able to kick his addiction, but it nearly cost him his career as Iron Man. There is a good chance Tony could become addicted to the stimulants, which could seriously derail his plans to overthrow the Maker. The new UltimateIron Manis, as a teenager, dealing with the demons that nearly killed his 616 counterpart.
