Summary
Robert Pattinson wasn’t everyone’s first choice to play Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’The Batman, but he proved to be an excellent Batman once the movie debuted, which makes the fact that a third film might not happen all the more tragic. The 2022 superhero movie was yet another attempt by DC Studios to reboot the popular antihero character, and it was much more well-received than the previous films featuring Ben Affleck as Bruce. The Batmanwas a box office triumph, having grossed $771 million against a $185–200 million budget, resulting in the development of a sequel.
The Batmanreceived three Oscar nominations — Best Sound, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Visual Effects — at the 95th Academy Awards.

Following the success ofThe Batman, the plan for a newBatmanfilm trilogywith Pattinson as the main character and a Batman-focused shared universe separate from the DC Universe was a go. Production onThe Batman – Part IIis expected to begin in the spring of 2025, while Max has a couple of television shows in the works. However, a thirdThe Batmanmovie might not be in the cards (at least, featuring Pattinson), given thatPattinson’s upcoming projects indicate that he doesn’t need the superhero series to be successful.

Pattinson Isn’t Exclusively Focusing On His Superhero Movie Career
Robert Pattinson is set to star in two upcoming exciting movies —Mickey 17andPossession— which are quite different fromThe Batman. This suggests that the actor might be trying to separate himself from the superhero world.Mickey 17is a science fiction film helmed byOscar-winning director Bong Joon-ho. It’s set to be released on June 11, 2025. Given that it comes from a renowned filmmaker and features an impressive cast (including Pattinson, Steven Yeun, Naomi Ackie, Toni Collette, and Mark Ruffalo),Mickey 17is one of the most highly anticipated movies of 2025 and is already garnering Oscar buzz.
Not only areMickey 17andPossessioncompletely separate fromThe Batman, but they are also quite different from one another.

Meanwhile,Pattinson’sPossessionis an upcoming cult-favorite remakeof Andrzej Zulawski’s 1981 psychological supernatural horror film of the same name. AlthoughPossessionwasn’t a commercial success in the 1980s, it later received cult status. So, a remake is quite exciting. Pattinson is attached to the project as a producer and, although it’s not confirmed, will likely also star in it. Not only areMickey 17andPossessioncompletely separate fromThe Batman, but they are also quite different from one another. Ultimately,Pattinson is thriving outside the superhero business, raising some concerns about the future ofThe Batmanuniverse.
The Batman 3 Is Far From Guaranteed At DC
DC Studios Has Been Making A Lot Of Changes Under James Gunn & Peter Safran’s Leadership
Aside from the fact that Robert Pattinson has a couple of exciting projects outsideThe Batmanin the works, DC Studios has been a mess in recent years. The DC Extended Universe was an epic failure. Consequently, DC Studios hired James Gunn and Peter Safran as the company’s co-presidents in 2022.Gunn and Safran plan to launch a new DC Universe, starting withSupermanin 2025, and will introduce a version of Batman separate from Pattinson’s character. So, Matt Reeves' superhero universe is not attached to the DC Universe, which could cause some problems.

A thirdThe Batmanfilm hasn’t been officially confirmed. Since they have their own plans for Batman,Gunn and Safran could pull the plug at any time and make Reeves’Batmanseries a two-movie outinginstead of a trilogy. It has been difficult enough to produce the first two films in the universe, let alone consider a third one. Only time will tell, butThe Batman 3might be a pipe dream.
