PlayStation nearly made a MediEvil movie with Tenacious D songs

Sir Daniel Fortesque almost got the big-screen treatment in a MediEvil movie, according to a producer – and it would have had original songs by Tenacious D.

While the superhero era isn’t over (SupermanandFantastic Fourare two of this summer’s biggest films), a once-cursed subgenre has emerged as a reliable money-maker for Hollywood: video game movies.

A Minecraft Movie is still the second-highest-grossing movie of 2025 (though it’ll be bumped down byLilo and Stitch), The Super Mario Bros Movie is one ofthe biggest films of all time, and adaptations like The Last of Us, Arcane, and Fallout have been well-viewed and acclaimed.

PlayStation Productions hasn’t quite nailed one film yet; Uncharted was a profitable, polarizing movie, Gran Turismo didn’t make a lot of money, andUntil Dawnleft as quietly as it arrived. So, what about MediEvil?

The world needs a MediEvil movie with Tenacious D

Ben Mekler, a writer and producer, revealed on X/Twitter that PlayStation considered making a MediEvil movie.

“We came very close to turning one of my favorite video games, MediEvil, into an animated movie with original songs by Tenacious D,” he wrote.

It should be said that Mekler is notorious for posting jokes and fooling people with fake reactions to new films, but his claim appears to be genuine.

The original game was released for the PS1 in 1998, following Sir Daniel Fortesque, the resurrected “Hero of Gallowmere”, as he journeys across a land of magic and zombies to defeat Zarok, an evil sorcerer.

In 2023, eagle-eyed fans spotted Fortesque’s legs in a video on PlayStation Productions’ website, suggesting that a feature film adaptation may have been in development. It’s unclear if this was Mekler’s project or something else entirely, although he did retweet a post about it (also, it was never confirmed that a MediEvil film was in the works).

Chris Amick, another writer and producer, shared the same post about Fortesque’s legs and wrote: “IYKYK [if you know you know].”

Mekler hasn’t said anything further about his unmade MediEvil movie, so we still don’t know exactly why it fell apart. In the meantime, read our list of thebest video game moviesand find out what else is coming out this year with our2025 movies calendar.
