Release date window
Onimusha: Way of the Swordcurrentlyhas a release window of 2026. For now, that’s as specific as we can be. More information will be shared soon.
Onimusha: Way of the Swordwill hit PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC when it becomes available.
Our first trailer forOnimusha: Way of the Swordcame duringThe Game Awards 2024. This brief teaser revealed the return of the Oni Gauntlet in the hands of a new protagonist. Based on thegame’s official description, we learn a few more details, but not much. The game will take place in Kyoto during the Edo period after an evil force called Malice has allowed the series’ classic foes known as Genma to overtake the city.
As for our new hero, all we know is that he is supposedly looking for his reason to fight.
Director Satgoru Nihei explained the plot will focus on this new protagonist fighting against the Genma after obtaining an Oni Gauntlet after “a twist of fate.” While none were named, he did tease that we will meet more historical figures as is common for the franchise.
Despite being the second trailer, Capcom returned at theFebruary State of Playwith its 1st Trailer: Protagonist trailer forOnimusha: Way of the Sword. This trailer finally reveals the identity of our new protagonist, the legendary Miyamoto Musashi. The character will be voiced by Keichiro Thomson and is modeled after Toshiro Mifune. While he appears stoic and capable, he does show some signs of humanity when he comedically runs from a group of armed men.
The major difference we see in gameplay withOnimusha: Way of the Swordfrom previous entries is the lack of a fixed camera. Those old games played somewhat likeResident Evil games, while this new one will be fully 3D and more action-heavy. So far, we’ve only seen the sword and a pair of daggers shown, but the series typically has a wider range of weapon options.
Onimusha: Way of the Swordappeared once again at the Capcom Spotlight. While the trailer wasn’t new, we did get more details from the developers.
The three focuses of the game were listed as compelling characters, the setting of Kyoto, and creating “the ultimate sword fighting action.” In terms of combat, the team wanted to make slashing through enemies as satisfying as possible.
Absorbing souls, which puts you in a vulnerable state, will allow you to recover health and perform special moves. Knowing when to risk absorbing souls will be a key element to the flow of battle. The team isn’t attempting to make the game overly difficult, but challenging enough to be satisfying to overcome.
There will also be plenty of environmental interactions available to the player. We see Musashi tilt a table and kick it towards a group, redirect an enemy into a torch, and even drop a cloth on an enemy’s head to blind them.
2026 is quite a ways away yet, and no specific date means you’re able to’t preorderOnimusha: Way of the Sword. For now, the best you can do iswishlist the gameand keep an eye on this article for updates.
