Summary

There is arguably no one who takes naming their farm animals more seriously thanStardew Valleyplayers. Plenty of players admit toselling some of their well-loved animalsjust to rename them after accidentally confirming a randomized name (or just after deciding to change the farm’s aesthetic). But there’s actually a way for players tochange their animals’ names already built into the game – no tearful goodbyes required.

Reddit userGneissGoingshared a snapshot from their game, in which they just learned that animals are not beholden for the rest of their virtual lives to the name given to them upon adoption. By clicking on the animal’s name after petting them, players can adjust the creature’s given name. There’s no additional fee or loophole to follow to rename animals –just click the name and alter it as desired.

This isn’t a feature that was released as part of theStardew Valley1.6 update, either – according to other players in the comments, this is a feature that has been available to all players across platforms.“I sold two cows just to buy new ones with better names, that same day I found out about the [possibility] of changing the animals’ names,” Reddit user mrqts27 commented on the post. Unfortunately, this same trick doesn’t work for the in-game children.

Players Have Been Accidentally Altering Their Animals’ Names Since Release

Stardew Valley Players Are Regularly Uncovering New Features

Apparently, this feature has been a part ofStardew Valleysince its release in 2016. Where there are plenty of players who didn’t know about this feature, there are just as many who have accidentally been altering their farm animals’ names while playing. Once a player has clicked into the animal’s stat box, they have to use the escape key on PC to exit. User tkdc4mp found out the “e” key doesn’t exit when they accidentally added the letter to the end of their animals’ names.

Stardew Valley takes players away from the city to start life on a farm, and with 12 candidates to pick from, romance is a big part of the adventure.

“I often accidentally added e’s on my animals names, so Beluga became Belugaee, and I was so confused how the name got changed,” they wrote in the comments of GneissGoing’s post. There are also a couple of players withmore than 1,000 hours into the game who are just now finding out about the rename featurethrough this Reddit post. The plus side of this not being a well-known feature is the plethora of pranks players have been able to play onunsuspecting co-op farmers.

“I renamed all our pigs [in one barn] some variation of Steve when my partner was out of town for work… 10/10 would recommend I heard them whisper screaming ‘STEVE WHY ARE YOU EVERWHERE,’” Reddit user Different_Bowler_574 wrote in the comments. User Tolstoyce shared they found this out after their spouse renamed their horse without telling them. Though the 1.6 update brings plenty of new content toStardew Valley, it’s clear players still haven’t seen everything ConcernedApe has already put into the game.
