What Happened in Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnation Season 2, Episode #22?
Rudy Makes a Daring Rescue at a Devastating Cost
Mushoku Tensei: Jobless Reincarnationinevitably introduces heartbreak, disappointment, or outright tragedy in any episodes following a “Turning Point” installment, with this being the biggest yet. Rudy has made great strides in his new life, getting married and seemingly avoiding the pitfalls his father, Paul, encountered, all while gaining admiration and respect for the man who raised him. However, finding the final guardian of the labyrinth inJobless Reincarnationseason 2 episode #22, turned out being the true “turning point”.
In this case, the guardian is a manatite-infused Hydra, a beast immune to long-range magic attacks and that can regrow its heads. Recognized by Rudy as the same creature from Greek mythology, he comes up with a plan to burn the heads after Paul cuts them. The battle goes great, with the team cooperating to cut off and cauterize the beast’s many heads, but when it’s down to the last head, Rudy gets distracted for a moment, leaving himself exposed to an attack. Paul stops the attack from hitting Rudy, the Hydra is slain, and Zenith, Rudy’s mother, is freed from her crystal prison, but Paul is brutally killed in the process.
Traumatized by the results of the battle, Rudy sees Paul take his last breath, sustaining a gruesome scar of his own. Paul told him earlier in the episode to save his mother, even if it kills him, which turned out to be foreboding. Rudy takes this lesson to heart in the fight, even jamming his hand into the eye of the Hydra, losing his hand in the process. While Rudy can treat his wound, there is no saving Paul, and when the party reunites with Lilia outside, it’s a somber day, especially as Zenith is left unable to speak.
