The Blacks were among those families in the wizarding world who prided themselves on being pure blood and were notoriously involved in the Dark Arts. Sirius explained that Regulus became a Death Eater immediately after leaving Hogwarts but panicked when he realized how far Voldemort was willing to go to secure power. This led the young man to be murdered.
Of course, Regulus' story was, in reality, far more interesting than this. InHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Harry learns that Regulus had actually died while actively trying to destroy Voldemort’s Horcruxes and that he sacrificed his own life so that Kreacher, the house-elf, could live.
